Advocacy
The Public Policy Council, to support of the Chamber’s overall mission, adopted five objectives:
1) Promote Economic Development
2) Protect Business Interests
3) Educate Our Members on Issues and Chamber Activities
4) Take Positions on Key Local and State Issues
5) Work in a Bipartisan Fashion for the Greater Good of the Business Community
Key Activities:
• Legislative Luncheon
• Candidates’ Forum
• State of the Community Series
Participate in the Georgia Chamber Federation, a partnership with local chambers focused on grassroots advocacy – working to empower our state’s small businesses by providing them with the information and resources necessary to actively engage their elected state officials and local leaders. Through this partnership, members with 10 or fewer full-time employees receive free membership into the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, adding an additional $500 value annually to existing membership benefits.

2024 Public Policy Agenda
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT & TAXATION
• Support and maintain current state tax incentives and economic development policies that have proven to attract investment, create jobs, incentivize growth, and provide economic stability.
HEALTH & WELLNESS
• Increase advocacy, awareness, and support of efforts of a robust local network of organizations and service providers working to expand and/or improve mental health services in the community.
TALENT & WORKFORCE
• Support efforts to address current workforce housing access and affordability challenges to ensure our region can attract and retain talent through our Greater Vidalia® Workforce Strategy Committee and the Toombs County/Cities of Vidalia & Lyons/Greater Vidalia® Chamber/Toombs County Development Authority 2023-2024 Housing Study.
LEGISLATIVE LUNCHEON
• Held annually in January, the Legislative Luncheon allows members to hear what elected officials are focusing on for the coming year. Participants have the opportunity to ask questions about issues that may impact their business.
STATE OF THE COMMUNITY SERIES
• The Greater Vidalia® Chamber is dedicated to informing Chamber members on current issues directly impacting their businesses and the community. During this series, a speaker and/or panel will educate and update Chamber members and the community at-large on current event topics. 2024 topics will include State of Cities/County to be held in September, State of Education to be held in October, and State of Agriculture in November.
AREA COUNTY JOINT COMPREHENSIVE PLANS
• Support and actively participate in the efforts of the Georgia Department of Community Affair’s efforts in updating the current comprehensive plan—a locally adopted document that serves as a long-term guide to growth and development for our local governments to use and implement. The document is required by the State of Georgia for all local governments and must be updated every five (5) years.
VOTER ENGAGEMENT
• Greater Vidalia® Chamber is committed to civic involvement and education by initiating efforts to narrow the gap between percentage of citizens registered to vote and percentage of citizens who vote on election day for midterm and presidential elections.
Cost Saving Benefits
Discount Workers’ Compensation Premiums – Businesses can save 7.5% on workers’ compensation premiums by becoming a Certified Drug-Free Workplace. This is a program of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and is implemented by the local Chamber.
Certified drug-free workplaces in Georgia receive a 7.5% discount on worker’s compensation premiums. To achieve drug-free certification, you must meet the following 5 criteria:
- Have a substance abuse policy.
The Chamber will provide the policy which contains simple instructions for customizing to your specific needs. - Conduct drug testing.
- Two hours of employee education per year.
The Chamber provides a monthly Drugs Don’t Work newsletter to you at no charge. You simply make copies and insert in employee’s paychecks. This newsletter counts as 20 minutes of education time. By year-end you will have accumulated 120 minutes of education time, equivalent to 2 hours. You do not lose production time while educating your workers! NOTE: After the first year of certification, only one year of employee education is required. - Two additional hours of supervisor training per year.
In addition to the 2 hours of employee education, your supervisors require two more hours of education/year. The Chamber provides a monthly newsletter specifically for supervisors that meet all training requirements. NOTE: After the first year of certification, only one hour of supervisor training is required. - Have an Employee Assistance Program or maintain a list of counseling and treatment centers.
